Mononucleosis

It is a throat infection that is usually caused by the Epstein Barr virus, usually lasting 2 weeks.

It is herpes and the main cause of infectious mononucleosis.

Epstein Barr is transmitted through saliva.

Epstein-Barr virus (VEB) was described in 1964.

If the infection occurs at an early age the symptoms are milder.

90% of adults have been infected.
70% of the population is infected before the age of 30.

In underdeveloped countries the population becomes infected before the age of 2.
In developed countries, the population becomes infected in adolescence.

Scientists at Cincinnati Children's report that epstein-barr virus (EBV) also increases the risk that some people will develop seven other major diseases.

This virus produces the EBNA2 protein that in contact with the human genome can cause:

  • Lupus
  • Arthritis
  • Diabetes
  • Celiac
  • Mononucleosis
  • multiple sclerosis
